Germany

One of the few places in the world with tuition-free, world-class higher education

Language of instruction: German or English
Visa: National student visa (Type D)
Tuition: Free at most public universities

Why Germany

Germany is Europe's largest economy and a world leader in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and applied sciences, with universities whose reputation in these fields has been built over decades. Higher education at public universities remains tuition-free in most German states and programs, even for international students — a rarity among developed countries.

A German degree opens doors not just to the German labor market but to the entire European Union, and Germany remains one of Europe's most stable and predictable countries for a long-term career and immigration path.

Language of instruction and requirements

German-taught programs are the most common — and often the most affordable — path, but require proven language proficiency (e.g. TestDaF or DSH) at a level sufficient for university study.

The number of English-taught programs — especially at the master's level in engineering, natural sciences and business — keeps growing, making it possible to start studying without German while picking up the language along the way.

Visa, documents and cost

Applicants from a number of countries, including Russia, need an APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate verifying the authenticity of their academic documents — a required step before applying for the national student visa (Type D).

While tuition at most public universities is free (aside from a small per-semester administrative fee), a visa requires proof of financial means — typically via a blocked account (Sperrkonto) covering the first year's living costs.
