Why Hungary

The headline argument is an EU degree: Hungarian universities operate within the European Higher Education Area, their degrees are recognised across Europe, and both tuition and living costs sit well below Western Europe.

Around 900 programmes are offered in foreign languages, predominantly English — meaning you can study without knowing Hungarian.

Stipendium Hungaricum: the detail that matters most

The programme was established by the Hungarian Government and is operated by Tempus Public Foundation. It covers tuition, a monthly stipend, an accommodation contribution and medical insurance.

The key difference from most scholarships: you cannot apply directly. A candidate must be nominated by the sending partner in their own country — a partner organisation of the programme. The list of partner countries is reviewed each cycle, so it must be checked on the official site before you start preparing documents.

And an honest caveat stated plainly by Semmelweis University itself: the scholarship does not fully cover living costs — you will still need your own funds. We do not quote the payment amounts here: they are set in forints and revised periodically.

Deadlines and amounts change from one intake to the next, and we do not publish the ones we cannot confirm. Look them up on the programme's official site — we will help you check the requirements and put the application together for your profile.
