Ankara University is a public research university in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Founded in 1946, it was the first higher education institution established after the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923; its creation is associated with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The university's history reaches back to the Faculty of Political Science, whose predecessor college, Mekteb-i-Mülkiye, was founded in Istanbul in 1859.
It remains one of the country's leading educational institutions. Today the university has 14 faculties and about 45,000 students. The Faculty of Political Science has an especially long heritage, with roots going back to 1859.
