Eszterházy Károly Catholic University is a higher education institution founded in 1774 in the historic city of Eger. In 1989, it was renamed after its founder, Bishop Károly Eszterházy. As of August 1, 2021, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Eger became the owner of the university. The institution currently accommodates 8,602 students pursuing various academic programs.
The university's buildings are scattered throughout the city of Eger, with the largest and oldest structure being the Lyceum (Building "A"), built in the Baroque style. Historically, the institution evolved through several stages of teacher training and higher education, previously known as the Lyceum, the Teacher Training College (starting from 1828), and the College of Education located within the Lyceum.
