Humboldt-UniversitΓ€t zu Berlin is the oldest of Berlin's four universities. It was founded on 16 August 1809 on the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt. In 1828 it was named Friedrich Wilhelm University after the Prussian king, and in 1949 it was renamed in honour of the brothers Alexander and Wilhelm Humboldt.
Its academic reputation rests on more than two centuries of history and on its position as one of Berlin's four universities.
