Kyoto University

Kyoto University is Japan's second-ranked national university and the country's preeminent research institution after Tokyo University. Founded in 1897 as Kyoto Imperial University, it remains a global leader in fundamental and applied science, engineering, and humanistic inquiry. Ten Nobel laureates studied or worked here; its faculties and research institutes span nearly every discipline—from theoretical physics to architecture, from East Asian studies to environmental science. The university's academic strength lies in its 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools, and 14 specialized research institutes. International students are eligible for housing in Kyoto University's eight International Houses (in Sugakuin, Yoshida, Uji, Ohbaku, and other locations) for stays of one month to two years depending on the facility.
