The University of Kuala Lumpur (Universiti Kuala Lumpur, UniKL) is a multi-campus technical university with its main campus in Kuala Lumpur. It brings together the higher education institutes of MARA, a Malaysian government agency, which is why it is spread so widely: 14 institutes across the country, from Kuala Lumpur and Kajang to Ipoh, Lumut and Kulim. The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia rated UniKL a Tier-5 "Excellent University" in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Each UniKL institute has its own field, and many grew out of partnerships with other countries. The Malaysia France Institute in Bangi dates from 1995, and much of its technical curriculum was developed with French institutions. The British Malaysian Institute in Gombak was set up in 1998 with support from the British government and companies such as BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. The Malaysian Spanish Institute sits in Kulim Hi-Tech Park. The Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology was the first maintenance training organisation in Malaysia approved by the Department of Civil Aviation to offer aircraft maintenance programmes. Other institutes cover information technology, marine engineering, chemical and bioengineering technology, design and medicine.
For an international student, the key choice is the institute. It decides both your subject and the town you live in: aviation is taught near KLIA, marine engineering in Lumut, medicine in Ipoh. Entry requirements and the language of instruction depend on the programme and the intake year, so check them in advance.
