Founded in 1450, the University of Barcelona is the flagship of Spanish higher education and Spain's sole member of the League of European Research Universities. With more than 64,000 students and approximately 8,000 staff members, it is among Spain's strongest universities and ranks 143rd in the world in THE (2027). It holds membership in respected international consortia including the Coimbra Group, CHARM-EU, and other leading university networks across Europe.
The university excels in medicine, biology, chemistry, and physics, where it ranks first in Spain. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2026) it places in the world's top 100 across 23 subjects, and in the top 50 for medicine and for library and information science. Its affiliated hospital and research centres conduct groundbreaking work in biomedicine, geoinformatics, and materials science. Humanities and social sciences are equally strong—philosophy, sociology, law, and history are taught at the highest level, with the university standing first nationally in multiple disciplines across these fields.
