Waseda University is a private research university in the northern part of Shinjuku, Tokyo. It was founded in 1882 by Εkuma Shigenobu, the eighth and eleventh Prime Minister of Japan, as the Tokyo Professional School, and formally became Waseda University in 1902. In Japan it is widely known as one of the two most prestigious private universities, alongside Keio.
Waseda today is organized into 36 departments: 13 undergraduate schools and 23 graduate schools. This gives it a broad academic range spanning bachelor's programmes and postgraduate research degrees. As of 2023, the university had 38,776 undergraduate students and 8,490 graduate students.
For an international applicant, Waseda is a large Tokyo university with a long history and a big academic community.
