Akdeniz University is a public research university in Antalya, on Türkiye's Mediterranean coast; its name means "Mediterranean". It is large: in 2021-22 it had 64,335 students, including 37,389 undergraduates, 3,893 master's and 1,540 doctoral students. In 2022 it employed 2,829 academic staff.
Its best-known faculties are medicine, law, and economics and administrative sciences. On 21 January 2011 surgeon Ömer Özkan and his team carried out Türkiye's first full face transplant at the university hospital. In all, Akdeniz has 24 faculties, 7 institutes, a conservatory and 57 research centres. It also has some less common fields: a Faculty of Fisheries, a Maritime Faculty in Kemer, and separate tourism faculties in Antalya and Manavgat.
The university is a member of the European University Association and takes part in Erasmus, so exchanges in Europe are open to students. It runs TÖMER, a Turkish language centre, and a College of Foreign Languages.
