Sabancı University is a private research institution founded in 1994 by the Sabancı Foundation, one of Turkey's largest family foundations. Its first students enrolled in 1999. It pioneered Turkey's first department-free undergraduate model, built on interdisciplinary learning across multiple fields before specialization. The campus spans 1.26 million square meters in Tuzla, roughly 40 km from central Istanbul, and is one of Turkey's most selective universities.
All teaching is conducted in English. The university is particularly strong in engineering, natural sciences, management, and social sciences. By QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, Sabancı ranks in the top 300 for electrical engineering, computer science, and business administration. The university is one of three leading private institutions nationally in research performance according to YÖK's (Council of Higher Education) research-focused university ranking.
Undergraduate students choose courses freely in year one before declaring a major in year two. International applicants can submit through the international admissions portal from December through August; a standardized test (SAT, TR-YÖS, or GCE A Levels) and English language confirmation are required. International student quotas range from 160 places in engineering and natural sciences programs to 120 in arts, social sciences, and management. The campus provides dormitory housing, and the international office assists with visas and accommodation.
