Marmara University is a public research university in Istanbul, Turkey, named after the Sea of Marmara. It received university status in 1982, but traces its origins to 1883, when it was founded in central Istanbul as Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Γlisi. It is one of Turkey's oldest and largest public universities, with around 2,800 teaching staff and about 80,000 students.
Its defining academic feature is multilingual education: courses are offered in Turkish, English, German, French and Arabic, making it the only multilingual university in Turkey. Today it is a major research university operating 13 campuses. Its history began with a commercial school, and trade-related studies remain part of its recognisable profile.
