Istanbul University is a public research university and the oldest university in Turkey. It was founded by Mehmed II on May 30, 1453, a day after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, and was later reformed as the first Ottoman higher education institution influenced by European approaches. Operating under its current name since 1933, it is the first university of modern Turkey.
The main campus sits in the old part of Istanbul, between the Beyazit and Suleymaniye mosques. More than 60,000 students study at the university and its branches, including about 18,000 postgraduate students, with a faculty of more than 3,500 professors. This scale, together with its national role, makes it one of Turkey's principal centres of research and graduate education.
For international applicants, Istanbul University offers a historically layered setting in the centre of old Istanbul.
