Founded in 1348 by King Charles IV of Bohemia, Charles University is the oldest university in Central Europe. Today it is the largest Czech university with 17 faculties spread across Prague, Plzeň, and Hradec Králové, serving approximately 55,000 students. The university maintains a strong international presence: roughly one in five students comes from abroad. Charles University is ranked 273rd globally in QS 2027 and consistently appears among Europe's top 100 universities.
The university excels particularly in medicine, natural sciences, humanities, and law. Research is a defining strength—the institution participates in prestigious European initiatives including the 4EU+ Alliance and has received the HR Excellence in Research Award two years running. The Faculty of Arts is especially strong in Russian studies, offering specialized programs on Russia and the post-Soviet region taught in Russian and English by scholars with deep expertise.
