China University of Petroleum (CUP) is China's leading specialized university for oil and gas, originally founded in Beijing in 1953 with backing from the country's major petroleum companies. It now exists as two independently run campuses that share this history: one in Beijing's Changping district, and one in the coastal city of Qingdao (the East China campus), Shandong province.

Chinese universities tighten portfolio and motivation-letter requirements every year — we track this university by university, so every application matches what the admissions committee actually expects right now.

The university is part of Project 211, and its Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline — part of the Double First-Class initiative — consistently ranks first nationally. Beyond petroleum engineering, CUP is strong in geology, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and safety engineering, all closely tied to China's energy sector.

Close ties to CNPC, Sinopec, CNOOC and other major energy companies give CUP graduates strong job prospects. The university admits international students to language programs, bachelor's and master's degrees, and offers grants.
