Jinan University (JNU) is one of China's oldest state-run universities, founded in 1906 specifically to educate young overseas Chinese. Today it's a large comprehensive university based in Guangzhou (with additional campuses in Shenzhen and Zhuhai), part of Project 211 and under the United Front Work Department, which oversees ties with Chinese communities abroad.

Chinese universities tighten portfolio and motivation-letter requirements every year — we track this university by university, so every application matches what the admissions committee actually expects right now.

JNU is known for strong programs in journalism and communication, pharmacy, economics and management, medicine and biotechnology. It has historically enrolled a higher share of international students and students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan than almost any other mainland university, giving it one of the most mature language-prep and orientation systems in China for students arriving from abroad.

Its location in Guangzhou — one of southern China's largest and most international cities — puts students close to the dynamic job market of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region. The university offers international students language programs, bachelor's and master's degrees, and grants.
