Nanjing Forestry University (南京林业大学) stands as one of China's oldest specialized institutions in forestry, ecology, and environmental science, tracing its origins to the Department of Agronomy at Sanjiang Normal College in 1902 and the Forestry Department of Jinling University founded in 1910. In 1952, the forestry departments of Nanjing University (formerly National Central University) and Jinling University merged to form Nanjing Forestry College, one of only three higher forestry institutions in the country at the time. In 1955, the forestry departments from Wuhan University, Nanchang University, and Hubei Agricultural College were incorporated, strengthening the institution's academic foundations. The college was renamed Nanjing Technological College of Forest Products in 1972, returned to its original name in 1983, and adopted the title of Nanjing Forestry University in 1985.
In 2017, Nanjing Forestry University was selected for China's Double First-Class initiative, with its discipline of Forestry Engineering designated for national-level priority development. The university is co-administered by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, the Ministry of Education, and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. Nanjing Forestry University's main Xinzhuang campus is located in the northeast of Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, nestled between Purple Mountain (Zijinshan) to the east and Xuanwu Lake to the west, in the scenic Suojin neighbourhood. The site originally served as the agro-forestry experimental field of Jinling University; the university relocated here in September 1955. Nanjing, one of China's Four Great Ancient Capitals, is a major transport hub connected by high-speed rail to Shanghai (approximately one hour), Beijing, and other major cities. The city is renowned for its rich historical sites, museums, parks, and the spectacular spring cherry blossom displays along the Ming Dynasty city walls.
The university's verdant, well-equipped campus houses a library with over 2.86 million print volumes and 4.387 million electronic books, two national experimental teaching demonstration centres, two national virtual simulation teaching centres, and modern laboratories and production bases. International students are accommodated in dedicated dormitories: graduate students stay in a building in the northwest of campus near North Gate 1, with single-occupancy rooms in four-bedroom apartments that include a shared kitchen, shower, and two toilets (450–540 RMB per month); undergraduate students reside in the Nandashan dormitory in the southeast near the East Gate, with double-occupancy rooms in three-bedroom apartments (360 RMB per person per month). All apartments are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, microwave, and induction cooktop. The campus features dining halls, sports facilities, laundries, a medical clinic, and convenient public transport links to downtown Nanjing and major railway stations.
Admission Competitiveness and Requirements
Nanjing Forestry University enrols international students at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. For undergraduate admission (English-taught programmes including Forestry and Wood Science & Engineering), applicants must hold a senior high school diploma, be aged 18 to 28, and demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to TOEFL 80+, IELTS 6.0+, or Duolingo 95+ (or proof of prior education in English). For the 2026 admissions cycle, applicants to undergraduate programmes are required to take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) organized by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) under China's Ministry of Education and to submit their test scores. The necessity of CSCA, the required subjects, and the language of the exam depend on the target university, programme, and admission year; applicants should verify the official requirements of the university and CSCA before registration. For programmes in forestry and wood science and engineering, CSCA mandatory subjects are Mathematics and Chemistry.
Master's applicants must hold a bachelor's degree, be under 35 years of age, and show proficiency in English or Chinese (HSK 4 with scores no lower than 180, or TOEFL/IELTS equivalent), along with two recommendation letters from professors, a research proposal (minimum 1,000 words), a certificate of no criminal record, and results of a physical examination. Doctoral applicants need a master's degree, be under 40, meet similar language requirements, and submit a detailed research plan (minimum 800 words). Tuition for undergraduate programmes is 16,500 RMB per year; for master's and doctoral programmes, 31,000 RMB per year. The application fee is 400 RMB, and annual comprehensive medical insurance is 600 RMB. The application deadline for programmes commencing in September 2026 is 31 May 2026. Applications are submitted online via https://njfu.17gz.org/. In accordance with regulations of China's Ministry of Education, former residents of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan who have emigrated and are applying as international students must present valid passports or nationality documents dating from before 30 April 2022, and proof of residence abroad for at least two years from 30 April 2022 to 30 April 2026 (nine months per year counts as one year).
Scholarships: Government and University Funding Streams
Nanjing Forestry University offers a broad range of scholarships for international students, including the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), the Jiangsu Provincial Government Scholarship, the Nanjing Municipal Government Scholarship, and the university's own NJFU Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen and Academic Scholarship for continuing students.
