History and Reputation

Nanjing University, commonly known as NJU (南京大学), traces its origins to 1902, when it was founded as Sanjiang Normal School. Over the subsequent decades, it evolved through several incarnations—Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeastern University, and National Central University—before adopting its current name in 1950. In 1952, NJU merged with the University of Nanking, a missionary institution founded in 1888, transforming into a comprehensive research university focused on arts and sciences. Today, Nanjing University is a member of the C9 League, a consortium of nine elite Chinese universities often compared to the Ivy League or the UK's Russell Group, which receive prioritized government funding and policy support.

As of September 2026, Nanjing University consistently ranks within China's top ten and the global top 100. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 placed it 62nd worldwide and 7th in China. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2026 ranked it 70th globally and 6th nationally. Particularly striking is NJU's performance in the Nature Index Annual Table 2025, where it ranked 7th among all universities worldwide for high-quality research output in leading science journals. This underscores the university's strength in fundamental research. For international applicants, Nanjing's reputation combines the prestige of old academic lineage with cutting-edge research infrastructure, making it a destination for serious scholarship.

Chinese universities tighten portfolio and motivation-letter requirements every year — we track this university by university, so every application matches what the admissions committee actually expects right now.

Academic Strengths

Nanjing University is historically renowned for its powerhouse natural science schools—especially physics, chemistry, astronomy, Earth sciences, and mathematics. The School of Astronomy and Space Science, established in 1952, is the largest and most prestigious astronomy programme in China. The university operates its own Time Domain Observatory (TiDO) and the Near-Infrared Solar Eruption Tracer (ONSET), and maintains partnerships with IRAM, SAO, and the SDSS-V consortium, giving students access to world-class telescopes and data. The Department of Physics is anchored by the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructure, a state key lab conducting leading research in superconductivity, quantum computing, and strongly correlated electron systems.

Beyond the natural sciences, NJU is equally strong in the humanities—particularly Chinese literature, linguistics, and history. The university hosts 43 national key disciplines and seven state key laboratories. In the ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, NJU ranked 3rd worldwide in Environmental Science and Engineering, 12th in both Earth Sciences and Atmospheric Science, 15th in Chemistry, and 31st in Physics. These are not marketing claims; they reflect real research impact. For applicants aiming for research careers in the physical and natural sciences, Nanjing offers one of Asia's most powerful platforms for fundamental and applied research.

Campus and City Life: Historic Gulou and Modern Xianlin

Nanjing University operates two main campuses. Gulou Campus (鼓楼校区), located at 22 Hankou Road in the city center, spans approximately 54 hectares and retains the historic architecture, libraries, and scholarly atmosphere of a classical Chinese university. Many humanities faculties and key research labs are based here. The main campus, Xianlin (仙林校区), lies 20 kilometers east in a modern university district and covers about 120 hectares. Xianlin features spacious grounds with contemporary academic buildings, research centers, dormitories, and sports facilities, and houses most of the natural science and engineering faculties. University shuttle buses run between the campuses regularly; the fare is 4 yuan using the student card.

Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, is a major cultural and historical hub in East China with a population exceeding 8.3 million. The city is about an hour by train from Shanghai (roughly 305 km) and enjoys a mild, humid subtropical climate—average annual temperature 15.4°C, with winter lows around −10°C and summer highs near 38°C. Both campuses are well connected by metro: Line 4 serves Gulou, and Line 2 connects to Xianlin. Students have easy access to shopping districts, historic sites like Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, the Confucius Temple, Xuanwu Lake, and international neighborhoods. On campus, there are canteens (including halal options), banks, medical centers, supermarkets, and gyms. International students typically live in the Xiyuan dormitory at Gulou or Dorm 21 at Xianlin; accommodations are standard double or single rooms with shared facilities and internet.

Admissions Competitiveness and New Requirements

Nanjing University is highly selective; for many programmes, the admissions bar is comparable to Tsinghua, Peking University, and Fudan. For international applicants, updated requirements took effect for the 2026/2027 cycle. For undergraduate programmes (four years, most taught in Chinese), the minimum Chinese proficiency is HSK 5 with a score of at least 180; humanities programmes often require HSK 6. Starting from the 2026/2027 academic year, all undergraduate applicants are required to take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA), a new standardized exam organized by the China Scholarship Council. The necessity of CSCA, the list of subjects, and the examination language depend on the target university, programme, and admission year; applicants should verify official requirements from both the university and CSCA before registering. For NJU, mathematics (in Chinese) is mandatory; for science and engineering majors, physics and chemistry may also be required. The deadline for submitting CSCA scores to Nanjing University is May 15, 2026. Undergraduate applications are accepted from March to mid-May via http://istudy.nju.edu.cn/.

For master's (2–3 years) and doctoral (4 years) programmes, standards are equally high. Chinese-taught programmes require HSK 4 for natural sciences and medicine, HSK 5 for humanities and business; graduation will require an upgrade of one level. English-taught programmes require IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, or Duolingo English Test 100 or above; graduates must achieve HSK 3. Master's and PhD applications run from March 1 to May 20. The university conducts its own review process, including document evaluation and, for some schools (mathematics, computer science, business, foreign languages), written exams and interviews. Selection is rigorous, and competition is fierce—especially for top-ranked natural science and economics programmes.

Scholarships

Nanjing University is a priority institution for Chinese Government Scholarships (CSC). The most sought-after scheme is CSC Type B (High-Level Postgraduate Program) for master's and doctoral students. The scholarship covers tuition, accommodation in university dormitories, health insurance (800 yuan/year), and a monthly stipend: 3,000 yuan for master's students and 3,500 yuan for doctoral students. The scholarship duration is 2–3 years for master's and 4 years for PhD. For the September 2026 intake, CSC Type B applications through Nanjing University were accepted from November 1, 2025, to January 20, 2026; the university conducts internal reviews and nominates candidates to CSC by March 17; final CSC decisions are typically announced in July. CSC Type B Silk Road Program and Type A schemes are also available for undergraduates, but with narrower eligibility.

In addition to government grants, the university offers its own scholarships for international students, covering tuition partially or fully—quotas and conditions vary annually, so check the Institute for International Students website (hwxy.nju.edu.cn) for current details. Important: holding multiple Chinese scholarships simultaneously is prohibited; if discovered, the government scholarship is immediately canceled. Scholarship holders undergo annual reviews from March to May; unsatisfactory performance results in suspension or cancellation of funding.

Common questions about admission

Why apply through UNIPROFI specifically?

UNIPROFI is about a well-thought-out application and a strong outcome: we build an application path around your profile, goals and the requirements of your selected universities. You work with mentors who are current students or graduates of these schools, so you get real understanding of the system, campuses and opportunities — not theory. We take on complex cases (including minors and admission without an 11th-grade diploma), build an individual strategy for your profile and goals, and support you through every stage, from documents to your visa.

Do you guarantee admission?

We don't offer "guarantees for the sake of a sale," because no one can directly influence a university's decision. What we do is structure everything to minimize the risk of rejection — matching you to the right universities, building a strong application strategy, and preparing documents carefully. Any refund or re-application arrangement is governed only by the current service agreement and the circumstances of the case.

What are my actual chances of getting in?

We do not state a universal admission probability because the decision belongs to the university. We instead assess your profile, programme requirements and application strategy.

Can I apply on my own — why do I need you?

You can, but most students end up losing time, making mistakes, or settling for weaker universities. We save you months, help you start at a stronger level, and prevent the mistakes that can cost you admission.
