Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is one of five official Research Universities in Malaysia, established in 1970 and located primarily in Bangi, Selangor, with campuses in Kuala Lumpur. The university serves approximately 40,000 students, including over 4,900 international students from 66 countries. UKM ranks 2nd among Malaysian universities in global rankings, achieving 126th place in the QS World University Rankings 2026. UKM's research portfolio spans four strategic areas: medicine and health sciences, sustainable development and environment, digital frontier technologies, and social-economic transformation. The university operates 13 research institutes, including the Institute of Microengineering and Nanoelectronics (IMEN), Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS), and Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI). Recently, UKM signed academic agreements with leading Russian universities including Kazan Federal University, RUDN, and the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod. The university's 13 faculties span engineering, medicine, law, Islamic studies, social sciences, information technology, education, and pharmacy.
International students at UKM must demonstrate English proficiency (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 550, or equivalent) and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. The university admits international students twice yearly (March and October intakes). On-campus housing is available across 13 residential colleges, with varying room types suited to undergraduate and postgraduate needs. All students must provide evidence of sufficient funds for living expenses. Many programs, particularly at the postgraduate level, are taught in English. Student visa processing occurs through the EMGS portal following receipt of an admission letter, with visa approval typically taking 4-8 weeks.
