The University of Osaka is Japan's largest national university and a national research university in Osaka Prefecture. Its roots go back to the Edo-era institutions Tekijuku (1838) and Kaitokudo (1724), and it was officially established in 1931 as Osaka Imperial University. After post-war educational reform, it merged with three pre-war higher schools and became a comprehensive university.
At its founding, the university had two faculties: science and medicine. It later expanded through mergers with pre-war higher schools into a comprehensive national research university. Today its campuses are in Toyonaka, Suita, Mino and the Nakanoshima district of Osaka.
For international applicants, the University of Osaka is a large national university with a long history and roots in science and medicine. Its campuses are spread across Osaka Prefecture, including Toyonaka, Suita and Mino as well as a campus in central Osaka's Nakanoshima district, offering both suburban and urban settings for study.
