The University of Pécs is one of the largest higher education institutions in Hungary and the first university in the country. It was founded in Pécs in 1367 at the request of King Louis I the Great, after Pope Urban V granted permission. The modern university is the official successor of this medieval institution.
The university has an important place in Hungary's higher education system. Its medieval origins and its present-day scale make it a significant academic centre, combining the heritage of the country's first university with the profile of a major contemporary university.
