Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) is a public university in Durian Tunggal, in the state of Malacca, and Malaysia's first public technical university. It opened on 1 December 2000 as the National Technical University College of Malaysia and became a full technical university under its present name on 1 February 2007. It was granted autonomy in 2015.
UTeM is known for what it calls a "Practice and Application Oriented" approach to teaching: engineers learn on problems close to real industrial work. The university has eight faculties supported by two learning centres. As of September 2019 it offered 86 programmes: 29 bachelor's, 37 master's, 13 PhD and 5 diploma programmes.
In July 2019 UTeM had 10,930 students. International students were most numerous at doctoral level: 403 of its 688 PhD students came from abroad. For an international applicant it is a route to a practice-led engineering degree at a Malaysian public university. Entry requirements depend on the programme and the intake year, and we check them for each applicant.
